# Q01 SERP capture — Google Shopping

- **Conversational query (asked of ChatGPT):** What's the best moisturizer for dry skin?
- **Fanout string used for this SERP:** `best moisturizer for dry skin`
- **NOTE:** the exact fanout string ChatGPT sends is UNOBSERVED. This is the plausible
product-focused reduction. If ChatGPT surfaces its search string in the UI, use that instead
  and re-capture.
- **Surface:** google.com/search?tbm=shop
- **Captured:** see filename timestamp (America/New_York)
- **Location personalization present:** yes — results show "Hoboken" and "Nearby, 3 mi / 9 mi".
Location is an uncontrolled variable and MUST be stated in the methodology block.

## Ordering as returned (top to bottom)

Block 1 is explicitly labeled **"Sponsored Products"**. The boundary where sponsored ends and
organic begins is NOT determinable from text extraction alone. Unresolved — see protocol
correction 1.

Brands appearing, in page order:
Clinique, Farmacy Beauty, Medik8, Shiseido, La Roche-Posay, DRMTLGY, Biossance, rhode skin,
Obagi, Bobbi Brown, Borghese, Estée Lauder, ZADDY, La Roche-Posay, Clinique, Shiseido, Thayers,
ELEMIS, CeraVe, Tatcha, Bonjout Beauty, Aquaphor, La Roche-Posay, Dermalogica, Vanicream,
SkinCeuticals, Oak Essentials, Clinique, Alpyn Beauty, Dieux Skin, TULA, Jones Road, CeraVe,
The Ordinary, Skinfix, IMAGE Skincare, La Roche-Posay, Clinique, Embryolisse, Aquaphor

Themed carousels below the main grid:
- "Dermatologist-Recommended Moisturizers": CeraVe, CeraVe, The Ordinary, La Roche-Posay, Tatcha
- "Drugstore Moisturizers": CeraVe, La Roche-Posay

## Observations

- Heavy repetition: Clinique x4, La Roche-Posay x4, CeraVe x3, Aquaphor x2, Shiseido x2.
Concentration is visible even in a single SERP.
- Price range $7.29 to $155.00.
- Google supplies its own editorialised groupings ("Dermatologist-Recommended"), which is a
second popularity artifact wearing an expertise costume, one layer below the AI.

## RETRACTED — the "all sponsored" pilot finding was wrong (2026-09-02)

An earlier version of this file claimed all 39 product tiles were sponsored and zero organic
tiles existed. **That was wrong.** Two errors on my side, neither of them Google's doing:

1. Page text was truncated at 7,000 chars when the body is ~14,238. The entire second half of
the page, which contains the organic **"All products"** grid, was never read.
2. The tile-counting selector matched only the sponsored carousel's markup. The organic grid
uses different markup and returned zero under that selector.

My own captures (logged-in and incognito, normal browser) show the full page. Re-measured
after fixing both errors, confirmed against his screenshots.

## Actual page structure (confirmed)

1. **Sponsored Products** — carousel, ~8 visible, explicitly labeled. Ad unit.
2. **Dermatologist-Recommended Moisturizers** — Google-curated module.
3. **Drugstore Moisturizers** / **Luxury Moisturizers** / **Ointments for Very Dry Skin** —
   further curated modules.
4. **All products** — the organic grid. ~40 products, 5,633 chars of text.
5. More results.

**The organic set exists and is roughly 40 items — which is exactly Peec's "top 40 organic
products." The replication is straightforwardly available.**

Organic grid, opening entries in page order (automated session, Hoboken, 2026-09-02):
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream $4.19 · La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair $11.49 ·
The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA $12.50 · Vanicream Daily Facial $13.97 ·
Neutrogena Hydro Boost $19.99 · La Roche-Posay Toleriane Face Cream $19.99 ...

## What IS interesting, and survives

- **The sponsored carousel is personalised.** My logged-out and logged-in captures share
only Clinique and Farmacy; the rest are entirely different products (Biossance, DRMTLGY,
rhode, Medik8, Obagi, Typology logged-out vs Vivier, Dr. Barbara Sturm, Caudalie,
Carrot & Stick, Bobbi Brown logged-in). Ads are tuned to the viewer.
- **The curated modules also differ by session.** Logged-out got "Drugstore Moisturizers";
logged-in got "Brand picks for you" — an explicitly personalised module — and had
"Ointments for Very Dry Skin" promoted higher.
- **Google supplies its own expertise-costumed groupings.** "Dermatologist-Recommended
Moisturizers" is a Google label, not a dermatologist's list. A popularity artifact wearing an
expertise costume, sitting one layer *below* the AI. That observation survives intact and is
  arguably the better one.
- **Organic ordering skews cheap-first** in this capture ($4.19, $11.49, $12.50, $13.97...)
despite "Sort by: Relevance". Worth checking whether that holds across queries.

## Method note for the remaining 9 queries

Scroll to the bottom before extracting — the organic grid is below the fold. Read the full
body text, no character cap. Count organic products from the "All products" section, not from
an anchor-tag selector.
